December 2009 Update from Bangalore

Went to Belaku Trust sale at Diane Calvin's house. She was surprised to see me, as she thought I'd left. I thought she was leaving earlier, too. Spoke for a bit with Asha, who is an epidemiologist with Belaku. After I'd told her I had thought about doing studying public health following my Bolivia experience, she encouraged me to do it on-line. Said University of North Carolina had a great program.

Took my morning walk up Thippesandra main road today. It's a market community right next to Indiranagar. But 7am is definitely not the time to go, as I found out today. Street sweepers out in force, pushing dust around and gathering all the garbage that's been left on the pavement (in U.S.: sidewalk) and on the roadside. And school buses blaring their horns while roaring down the narrow street.

But there are upsides about it, too. All the flower sellers have their goods out--the jasmine a feast for the nose. People sipping steaming cups of freshly brewed coffee on the sidewalk. This is the place to come for early morning emergency shopping for things like ready made coffee, bread, eggs, and milk. Nothing in Indiranagar is open by 7. You're lucky if Cafe Coffee Day is open by 8:30!
