January 2007 Update from Bangalore

Monday, January 1, 2007

Flew back from Krabi, Thailand to Bangalore via Bangkok tonight, getting in around midnight. It's always nice to arrive home after traveling.

Tuesday, January 2, 2007

Took Molly to see Dr. Chinnappa. He took one look at her and said, "She doesn't look good." Ordered blood and urine tests, and everything came back clear. Probably viral, he said.

Wednesday, January 3, 2007

Walking home from yoga this morning, saw Venkatesh, a regular walker in the local park. He asked where we'd been lately and I told him we'd been to Thailand. He inquired about the kids (he adores Charlie especially) and I told him two got sick while traveling. He mildly upbraided me for traveling all over with the kids, and urged me to leave them home next time we took off, and told me that he'd take care of them. It's really nice to have good neighbors.

Molly and Charlie's school is open today, but I kept them both home to recuperate further.

Thursday, January 4, 2007

Molly went back to school, but Charlie stayed home again. I brought him to Dr. Shenoi, a pediatrician in the neighborhood, and he says his fever and cough are viral, as usual.

Friday, January 5, 2007

Badri and I went to a neighborhood joint, Take 5, to have a couple drinks and relax. Celine came over to babysit.

Saturday, January 6, 2007 Charlie's 3rd birthday

Charlie woke up happy, and especially happy to open his gifts. Really liked the plane with Mickey Mouse as pilot that you stick on the ceiling and he flies around. Did the easiest party possible: went to Pizza Corner with a couple other families (Priya's and Jennifer's) and had a great time. That's exactly what Charlie asked for for a party last month, and it was easy to oblige, only a couple blocks from home.

Everyone came over to the house after the party to continue the fun. Great to catch up with Priya and get to know Jennifer better. Jen just moved here a couple months ago. I first met her when I was walking to yoga class and she jumped out of a moving car to ask me whether I lived in the neighborhood, and what was my opinion of the place. I liked her from the start. Her husband's an immigration lawyer and she's studying early childhood development. Her daughter Berkeley is younger than Molly, but loves hanging around with Maya. They've moved into an old friend's house--Maya's best friend, Kumali, who just moved back to the U.S.

Sunday, January 7, 2007

Had a nice relaxing morning at home. Took a walk around the neighborhood and ended up at Right Lines Gallery, run by a neighbor of ours, Indira. Badri really likes an artist's work (Paresh Hazra, a Bengali) that is exhibited there, and the kids were kept amused by all the rescue dogs that hang out there.

In the afternoon we took a drive over to Palace Grounds to see the National Handicrafts Expo. The kids didn't last too long, but it's nice for them to see, if only briefly, work of different regions of the country. We couldn't resist a few paintings from Bihar, Madhubani paintings. Also picked up two salwar kameez sets for Maya because she's grown out of all of hers: beautiful chikan work, special embroidery from Lucknow, and one set from Gujarat with gorgeous metal beads.

Maya was a little warm this afternoon, so I decided to keep her home from school tomorrow.

Monday, January 8, 2007

Charlie back to school today along with Molly. He is so happy to be there. Really loves Miss Priti and his other teachers, Nimi and Bindu. He celebrated his birthday at school today with a cake I ordered from the school caterers. Neev doesn't allow outside cakes because of children's allergies, which makes sense.

Badri bought the Paresh Hazra piece he saw yesterday (pretty big--about 5' x 5'). We had a carpenter from Handiman come over to hang lots of the art we've bought in the last year that's just been laying around. We've lived here nearly three years, and putting up the visuals really brings the place alive. There's a big orange wall in the upstairs playroom where I put up a dozen family photos.

Maya was feeling better today, thank goodness.

Tuesday, January 9, 2007

Picked Maya up today and I had to carry her off the bus. As soon as we got in the car she threw up. Poor thing. Feeling very warm, too.

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Molly and Charlie in school, and Maya out today, of course. She was in good spirits, so we had a lot of fun. She really loves all the art that we finally put up on the walls. I spoke to her former art teacher at Neev, Nilu, and asked her about The Art School off 80 Ft. Rd. She doesn't think much of it, and said she might be starting up some of her own after school classes now that she's moving to Indiranagar from Whitefield. That would be fantastic! That's one thing that's really missing in Maya's experience at the Canadian School--the art program is quite mediocre compared to what she was doing with Nilu at Neev.

Took a drive out to Quetzel to see whether I could pick up some children's furniture. Not much luck there, but they sent me to Home Stop on Magrath Rd. across from Garuda Mall. Best housewares collection I've seen in Bangalore. Picked up lots of wine glasses, either for us or for one of Badri's buddies who just got married.

We hired a new person a few weeks ago, Jayama. She used to work for my Argentinian friend, Laura, when she lived around the corner (she's since moved to Goa). Laura sings her praises, and she has a wonderfully warm personality and smile, so I think it will work out. Her husband, Srinivas, is an out-of-work housepainter, so he came over to give an estimate on painting some of the inside and outside of the house. 3000rs for materials (roughly $70) and 1500rs (less than $40) labor for two days.

Thursday, January 11, 2007

Met up with Debra for breakfast at the Max Mueller Bhavan Center on CMH Road. They have the best bacon around, I just discovered a couple months ago. Nice cafe on the top floor, at great prices. Debra's back from her yoga teacher training in Goa for a month, then will head back for another eight week session in February.

Went for a facial at the Leela. Very relaxing! Better than a massage.

Friday, January 12, 2007

Visited Sishu Griha school with Badri. Only a five minute drive from the house. It's an Indian school in the neighborhood that's supposed to be more well-rounded, not focused exclusively on academics, as the other local schools. It looks great from the office and the hallways, but they don't allow you to go into the classrooms. We're thinking about moving Maya there next year so she won't have such a trek to the Canadian school. I hear positive things about Sishu Griha from all the locals who send kids or have sent kids there.

Marylouise picked up Maya with Hannah today and they came over for a playdate. Inder came after work and we all had dinner together. I'd say Marylouise, Kirsty, and Priya are the closest I have to sisters here. And a bonus is that our kids like their kids!

Saturday, January 13, 2007

Went on a stroller walk with Molly and Charlie and ended up at the opening of Claytopia on 6th Main. Brinda, a Neev mom, had told me about it. I called Badri and he came with Maya and met us there. The kids had a ball painting on bowls and tiles. Great to have such extracurricular places opening up around the neighborhood. Bunch of families showed up from school.

Went to the train station with Maya to pick up Amma and Appa, Kamala and Usha Chitti ("chitti" means mother's younger sister--Amma [Prema] comes first, then Usha, then Kamala). So good to see all of them at the same time. This is the first time the three sisters have all been together since Chennai in 2001 for Vijay's wedding. Kamala Chitti came from Baltimore, Maryland and Usha Chitti from Delhi for their brother, Kas's, 60th birthday, which was celebrated on the same day as Charlie's birthday.

Sunday, January 14, 2007

We all took the one hour drive to Taj Kuteeram. It's a beautiful location out in farm country, next to Nrityagram, the dance village where people train in classical dance. Unfortunately, the dance village was closed so the relatives couldn't see it. But we had a lovely brunch at the Taj and then wandered around, relaxing on the grounds. The kids fed the rabbits and climbed the tree. Badri, the kids, and I headed home about 3pm, and Amma, Appa, Kamala, and Usha Chitti stayed the night out in the country.

Monday, January 15, 2007

Today is Pongal, the harvest festival of South India.

Amma, Appa, Usha, and Kamala came back in the afternoon.

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Brought Amma, Usha Chitti and Kamala Chitti shopping on Commercial Street. Spent hours looking at jewelry. I bought my first "bangle" bracelet, Amma got a Navaratnam pendant (nine gems representing the nine planets), and Usha Chitti got ruby earrings. I really enjoy shopping with all of them--jewelry (especiallhy gold) is of paramount importance to Indian women. That, along with art, is where a lot of investing is being done here these days. Many women without bank accounts will buy a gold chain as a place for keeping their money.

Went out to dinner at Roomali with a View on 100ft Road for Malinder's going away get together. Kirsty, Fiona, Hannah, Malinder, Jolene, and Jennifer there.

Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Amma, Appa, Usha Chitti, Kamala, and Badri went to see the movie, "Guru", at PVR Cinemas. They did it right--sat in Gold Class and had a marvelous time. I would have gone, but it was in Hindi without subtitles.

Friday, January 19, 2007

Went to Leela Galleria shopping with Amma, Usha Chitti and Kamala Chitti. Went down to see Shanelle at Mahua Gallery and there was one piece in particular that Amma loved.

Badri and I flew to Sri Lanka for a "work weekend". I fell in love with the place. Very much like Kerala. We stayed at the Taj Bentota, which has a phenomenal view of the Indian Ocean.

Went wild at a lovely crafts shop called New Sunflower in Obadawatta, Bentota, Sri Lanka (Tel: 0094 034-2275563). The owner said tourism and business in general has been down since the tsunami in 2004, coupled with the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) activity. They have beautiful wooden and leather goods. We picked up the following: cinnamon tray 2900 ($27), rainstick 1100 ($10), drum 800 ($7.40), sandals 950 ($9), music box 1500 ($14), bambo cup 500 ($5), mask 3600 ($33), mask 4800 ($44), granite elephant 1900 ($18). Prices all in Sri Lanka rupees ($1=108 SLR). And the nice thing was that he told us if we paid cash, we'd get 20% off. And he accepted local currency, as well as Indian rupees and U.S. dollars, which we happened to have on us.

Saturday, January 20

Spent a lot of time swimming and walking on the nearly deserted beach. Walked about a half mile to a different resort called Saman Villas http://www.samanvilla.com/. See the link and you'll see my idea of paradise.

Badri in Sri Lanka. This is the spot where we shared a bottle of champagne with his colleagues to celebrate his promotion.

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Today is Amma and Appa's 48th wedding anniversary. We called them from the taxi on our way to Colombo from Bentota. Had a yummy sushi dinner at the Colombo Hilton. Nice way to end the long weekend.

Monday, Jan. 22

Today there were riots linked to the execution of Saddam Hussein, so all the schools were closed. "Hundreds of Hindu extremists burnt shops: Authorities lifted a curfew in violence-hit parts of the southern city of Bangalore, India's technology hub, on Monday, a day after hundreds of Hindu nationalists burned shops and set vehicles ablaze, news reports said.
An overnight curfew was imposed in the Bhartinagar district of Bangalore on Sunday after police gunfire killed one person and injured three others, the Press Trust of India news agency quoted Police Commissioner N. Achuta Rao as saying. Sunday's violence appeared to be in retaliation for a procession taken out by Muslims two days earlier protesting the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein."

So we arrived home from Sri Lanka, happy to see all the kids stayed home from school. Most offices in town closed also. In an unrelated piece of news, the house was without power most of Saturday and Sunday when we were gone, also. We only learned this when we came home.

Tuesday, Jan. 23

Early in the morning, Amma, Appa, Kamala and Usha Chitti headed back to Chennai. It was nice to have the house full of guests, and Charlie really enjoyed sleeping in our room for a while.

Met Sarah at the park for the first time in a long while with her four kids.

Wednesday, Jan. 24

Went to the Sishu Griha school with Badri to meet the principal, Sujatha Mohandas. Very nice woman. There are very few seats in a school that lots of locals like to go to, because it's so centrally located. It's Montessori up to grade 4, and Maya will be going into grade 2 if she's accepted.

Thursday, Jan. 25

Had Sriram, Deborah, Kajoli and Richi over for dinner. Sriram is in town from California for a wedding, Deborah's temporarily home from Goa, and Kajoli and Rishi are school friends and cousin (Rishi and Badri) who went to school together with Sriram.

Friday, Jan. 26 Republic Day in India

On this day in India in 1950, India became a truly sovereign state, realizing the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and all the freedom fighters who fought for the independence of their country. It's the most popular of all the national holidays in India.

Schools were closed, of course, so we drove out to Golden Palms Spa and Resort, about an hour from Bangalore, with Sriram at the wheel. We had brunch and day use of the pool, and had a nice hot day for the occasion. Really beautiful place. Lots of Bangaloreans come out here for an overnighter or day trip. The kids had a blast with their Uncle Sriram, who's really been close with all the kids, especially Maya, since they were very young.

Saturday, Jan. 27

Went to the science museum with Kirsty's family.

In the evening went to Marylouises and Inder's to celebrate Inder's 42nd birthday. I must say, they throw the greatest parties!

Sunday, Jan. 28

Badri left at 4am to go to the U.S. for a couple weeks. He barely had two hours of sleep since we didn't get home 'til about 1:30.

Went to brunch at the Hotel Grand Ashok with the kids. Met Kirsty, Nina, Jennifer and all their kids there. Brigit came along later. The children were entertained most of the time we were there by running around on the grass and then sitting and watching the potter spin. Maya had another portrait done by the caricature artist there.

Monday, Jan. 29, 2007

Met Alla and Debora for lunch at Kund, a restaurant in the neighborhood. Alla recently returned from her trip to New York and Latvia. Finding it hard to be back here. Just plain bored basically. And Deborah will be off to Goa soon for another eight weeks yoga teacher training.

Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007

Went to Maya's school for the reading groups. It's a long haul to get there, but I enjoy being in her classroom and seeing her school friends (especially to spy on her and her "boyfriend", Kfir. All looks absolutely innocent in the classroom--they don't pay the least bit attention to each other).

Met Sheela and Sammy at their house for a playdate with Molly.

Comments:
Hi,

This might sound totally out of the Blue.

I came across your blog and you mentioned that you were planning on sending your child to Shishu Graha. How has your experience been so far with Sishu Griha? We live in Indiranagar and both Neev & Sishu Griha are equally close to our house.

Would love to hear your thoughts since, if I understand correctly your kids were at Neev too at some point.

Thanks in advance.
